A quick rundown of GenZ vs. Alpha
Gen Z is 25 now. They have jobs, debt, and a deep suspicion of anyone trying too hard.
Gen Alpha is 12. They’re still spending their parents’ money on aesthetic experiences and fandoms.
I’ve been guilty of abbreviating them to “Z/Alphas” but the truth is these generations have almost nothing in common. Here's what to know about both:
——-
🟢 GEN Z shops like a journalist. Reddit threads. YouTube reviews. Four hours researching a $30 face wash. Discovery on TikTok, deliberation on Reddit, conversion on whatever's cheapest. The funnel is a spiral.
🔴 GEN ALPHA shops in 45 seconds. See it. Want it. Need it. Creator haul → peer pressure → "everyone at school has one." Done.
——-
🟢 GEN Z wants brands to be real. They watched Instagram get exposed as a highlight reel. Rough edges = authentic. A lo-fi TikTok beats a $5M campaign every time. And they'll drop you the moment you sell out.
🔴 GEN ALPHA wants brands to match the vibe. Brand is an aesthetic, not a logo. They're loyal to how something feels… until it doesn't. Then they're gone, and they told their friends before you even noticed.
——-
🟢 GEN Z is skeptical of everything, including the platforms they themselves built. "Maybe this app is bad for me." [still refreshes] They use tech critically. They're exhausted by performative activism. They want the receipts.
🔴 GEN ALPHA has no before-times. No digital-native learning curve: they arrived already fluent. But they increasingly want to experience tangible things they can feel and see with their own eyes.
——-
It is a mistake to treat these two as one "youth audience."
Gen Z needs you to earn their trust through consistency and honesty. Gen Alpha needs you to show up authentically in their creator ecosystem before they even know you exist.
They require different strategies, different voices, different entry points.
The brands winning across both are building distinct relationships with each: meeting Gen Z in their skepticism and Gen Alpha in their enthusiasm.
The generation you ignore is the generation that ignores you back.
